ony Ericsson Experia X1 Runs on Windows Mobile

Terminal.hu has just posted pictures of the Sony Ericsson Experia X1. What’s so special about this? The fact that it runs on the yet to be announced Windows Mobile 6.1.

Bloggers and Journalists alike were frustrated with the team showcasing the Experia X1 at Mobile World Congress, the team were very “hush hush” about it all. Well the reason was because Microsoft probably didn’t want them showcasing the unannounced Windows Mobile 6.1 Operating System.

Apart from the OS exposed, there are some other features to be found; the Qualcomm 7200 a running @ 528 Mhz for one, 128MB of RAM and a 1500mAh battery (that’s right Nokia, common sense).

new Nokia’s 6110 mobile

According to Route 66, the company that puts the GPS navigation software on Nokia 6610’s, Nokia is aiming to put a GPS chip in every single handset they manufacture.
Although the N series have started to get GPS, Nokia is apparently aiming to put GPS into every one of its phones in the future, according to Route 66’s account manager for Britain, Mike Goodenough. He told us “Nokia’s goal is to be at the top of navigation”, bar none.
In essence we’ll see GPS in everyday mobile phones - even pay as you go cheapies. It’s another selling point in the great mobile phone upgrade push. The downside is, of course, that it’ll batter battery life. GPS can be turned off though and it’s a damn sight more efficient than using a separate GPS dongle and using Bluetooth for the two to talk.

    handphone LG KG290

    handphone LG KF300

    From its 8-megapixel touchscreen Renoir to the quirky Qwerty keyboard packing KS360, LG has recently been big on offering something a bit different. Touch-sensitive controls, high-end multi-megapixel cameras, novel user interfaces - LG's been busy grabbing attention. But now with its KF300 flip phone, LG has taken a more conventional, low-key approach.

    Exclusive to Orange in the UK, the KF300 is far from a high-flier, and has already been available in some other countries. It's pitched at phone buyers after something that's not too complicated, does the job for calling and texting, but that looks OK too. The features spec is down-range, though not quite bare-bones basic. It doesn't do fancy 3G multimedia stuff, but has got a 2-megapixel camera, an onboard MP3 player, and an FM radio among its phone essentials. MicroSD card support means you can also carry up to 2GB of tunes around with you.

    Design and handling
    The KF300 is a slim-ish and reasonably attractive clamshell design, with some chrome edging, and an almost lenticular steel blue patterning reflecting light and catching the eye under the smooth plastic front panel. There's a small LCD screen hidden away under the panel that lights up when roused, with a clock, standby or call information displayed.

    LG has focused in on 'easy to use' though with this phone's design. It's not the smallest clamshell phone around; measuring 98.8(h) x 49.5(w) x 16.2(d)mm closed, giving it quite a large footprint. Flip open the shell, though, and you see that LG's used the spacious dimensions to make it's buttonry loud and clear - the numberpad keys are big and broad, with number and letter labelling distinctly large.

    Unusually too, on the other half of the clamshell, directly under the 2.2-inch screen, there's a row of buttons, marked with icons for hotkey shortcuts to specific functions - alarm clock, calendar, image gallery and favourites (users can create their own customised shortcut list of features, though the MP3 player is the out-of-the-box list-topper).

    These are a key part of LG's approach to making easy the KF300's operation. It's more giving a helping hand than coming up with something completely novel or patronisingly over-simplified - LG has also included more conventional ways to navigate menus and use shortcuts. A typical navigation directional pad sits above the numberpad with standard call and end buttons and a pair of softkeys flanking the D-pad. There's also a clearly labelled button for firing up the camera.

    In standby, shortcuts are assigned to the navigation pad controls (text messages, contacts, music player, ringtone profiles), which, to help users, are displayed graphically onscreen. As usual, these can be changed or hidden by dipping into the settings menu. It's all familiar LG stuff; the main menu set-up is a regular grid of icons, with further sub menus listed with numbered options next to them for quick selection.

    Out of the box, menu fonts are super-sized - presumably for people with eyesight issues. This can be easily adjusted to suit your own tastes though; we found the larger size actually hampered quick scanning of and easy scrolling through menu options.

    The buttons ranged under the nicely size QVGA, 262K-colour display are generally a good idea for technophobes or the non tech-savvy user who recoil from detailed phone menus. Strangely enough, they're similar to hotkey arrangements used on some of Nokia's high-end Eseries business phones. One slight issue we had was when using softkey options. When these appear in the bottom left or right of the screen, users may instinctively find themselves tapping the hotkey directly under them (opening up alarms or favourites) rather than pressing the much further away softkey buttons on the lower half of the phone. We guess that's just something users will have to learn not to do.

    handphone asus nuvifone G 60

    The Garmin-Asus nüvifone product line represents a significant step forward in location based service (LBS) technology and offers a superior and innovative value proposition for those seeking an all-in-one, LBS-centric phone, mobile web-browser and personal navigator. Although every Garmin-Asus nüvifone has LBS at its core, each device has unique characteristics because they're designed for specific audiences. The nüvifone G60 is designed for the active on-the-go user who wants an easy-to-use device and appreciates the peace of mind that comes from a device that answers common questions like "Where am I?", "Where am I going?" and "How do I get home?"

    The quad-band GSM nüvifone G60 with 3.5G was designed for high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) networks and supports Wi-Fi for fast data connections. When used on a HSDPA network, the nüvifone G60 has the ability to download files at a fast transfer speed that makes internet searches and downloading large files a breeze.

    The nüvifone G60 has a large 3.55-inch display that features three primary icons – "Call," "Search," and "View Map." Secondary icons appear on the side of the home screen and can be organized by the user's preference. Customers can easily scroll through the icons by swiping their finger across the large touchscreen display, and a built-in accelerometer allows every screen to be viewed in either portrait or landscape orientation.

    The nüvifone G60 was developed with an LBS-centric design philosophy. Location information is added to everyday applications including email, SMS, photo sharing, social networking and more in order to enhance applications and share location information with others.

    Navigation is at the heart of the nüvifone G60. The nüvifone G60's sat nav operates like a Garmin nüvi® with preloaded maps of North America or Eastern and Western Europe, and has millions of points of interest (POIs) including hotels, restaurants and street addresses. The POIs can be easily accessed for turn-by-turn voice prompted directions. If a turn is missed along the route, the nüvifone G60 automatically recalculates a route and gets the user back on track. In addition, the nüvifone includes quick access to online points of interest through internet enabled local search. The nüvifone harnesses the power of the worldwide web and information about local merchants and attractions is continually updated.

    Users can also supplement the POI data with LBS-centric applications from Connected Services, a suite of online applications and dynamic relevant data from Garmin-Asus that adds location intelligence to navigation, phone and browser functions. The expandable list of applications and content includes real-time traffic information, White Pages, weather, flight status, local events, and movie times.

    The nüvifone product line also includes Ciao!™, a ground-breaking LBS application that helps users stay up to date on their friends' whereabouts and status by linking numerous location-centric social networks. Through Ciao!, nüvifone users will see their friends' location on a map and then be able to navigate to that location with ease. Nüvifone users can also choose to have the nüvifone automatically update their social network location information.

    The nüvifone G60 features an advanced mobile HTML web browser. Users can surf the web on their phone via Wi-Fi or 3G networks, and the information is presented similar to a PC browser. The nüvifone G60 supports POP3 and IMAP4 email such as Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail. The touchscreen soft keyboard is customizable to QWERTY or A to Z, making it easy to send and receive messages. The nüvifone G60 also includes predictive text to help prevent typing errors.

    The LBS-centric nature of the nüvifone G60 shines through when using the three megapixel camera with auto-focus. The camera automatically geotags images with an exact latitude and longitude reference of where the image was taken. The user may then save the image so they can navigate back to the location, or email the geo-tagged image to others. The nüvifone also provides direct access to millions of geo-located landmark and sightseeing photographs available through Google's Panoramio picture sharing site. The Panoramio photos are searchable and are sorted by the distance from the current location.

    handphone iPAQ 910c

    I picked up the HP iPAQ 910c the other day, after it was just last week made available through Rogers Wireless. Overall, I have to say I'm quite impressed. Call clarity is better than I had expected for a WinMo smartphone. The design is is quite intuitive overall, and the keyboard is better than with other phones I've played with thanks to the high rounds on each. And despite HP's claim of 4gb max size on supported MicroSD cards, I popped a new Sandisk 8gb SDHC card in and it recognized it right away (and it's been working fine since). The GPS works quite well when a signal is finally acquired (I've used both the included Google Maps software, as well as Garmin Mobile XT), but the antenna seems weak and takes a while to lock on.

    PROS:
    - Supports pretty much every input method available (touch, stylus, direction pad, scroll-wheel)
    - Good call clarity
    - Excellent keyboard design
    - Screen has good colour clarity and is exceptionally crisp and readable (even in direct sunlight)
    - WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS capabilities.
    - Works (unofficially) with 8gb SDHC cards.

    CONS:
    - The recessed screen makes touching the edges difficult (which is especially noticeable when trying to touch the close button in most software... though thankfully there is a key alternative)
    - No included touchscreen interface to make the device more touch-friendly (though third-party software such as Spb Mobile Shell and Resco Contact Manager work quite well).
    - GPS antenna is weak and it takes quite a while to acquire a good signal.

    Overall I'd have no qualms with recommending this unit. I'm very happy with it.

    * NOTE: The phone doesn't quite look like the photo on this page (as of Feb. 21, 2009).

    handphone motorola ve465

    Motorola has introduced its VE465 semi-rugged clamshell handset that is now available on Alltel's website, but no word has been released concerning its pricing details at the moment. Those living in the Great White North can check out the VE465 on Telus if they're interested, as it will be going under the “Motorola VE465 Active Edition” moniker there. Specifications of the VE465 include :-

    * CDMA 800/1900/1700/2100 connectivity
    * 1.9" TFT internal display with 176 x 220 pixels and 65k colors
    * 1.05" CSTN external display with 96 x 80 pixels
    * Brew OS
    * Stereo Bluetooth
    * Music/video player
    * 1.3 megapixel camera
    * USB 2.0
    * microSD memory card slot

    Definitely not something worth drooling over, but folks who want a hardy and reliable flip phone without breaking the bank might want to give this a second look.

    handphone LG KT610

    LG, it seems, has accepted that the Symbian S60 combo might help to propel their smartphone business all the way to the top. Or at least, they thought so with the KT610, a QWERTY keyboard equipped folding handset first announced in Mobile World Congress 2008 that runs on Symbian with the Series 60 user interface.

    At first, you’d think that the LG KT610 won’t be able to do much, because a small dash of a horizontal display and a huge numeric keypad are all that can be afforded by its unassuming front face. But if you ease open the flap of this side-folding clamshell, you’ll find that you’re in for a bit of a surprise.
    nside the LG KT610 is a larger display, and this is where you’ll be able to operate the smartphone part of the phone. It actually runs with Series 60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, so Nokia smartphone users will feel right at home. Newcomers to this environment won’t be having a hard time since S60 is billed and famous for being user-friendly.

    Also included in the LG KT610’s features is a 2 megapixel camera, built-in GPS and Bluetooth 2.0, full-QWERTY keyboard and microSD card slot.

    And now that some live pics of the LG KT610 have surfaced, it shouldn’t be long for the device itself to finally arrive

    handphone nokia 96

    Our friends from switched have stumbled upon this image (from here) that supposedly shows the Nokia N96. The phone would have a dual sliding keyboard and a large display. Other features are said to be. This is a computer graphics rendering and I personally don’t give a lot of credit to this rumor, because the dual-slider looks so fragile, but who knows? What’s your take? Do you want to believe?

    new Nokia Aeon mobile

    Nokia's research and development team have kicked it up a gear with an attractive "aeon" concept phone showing up in the R&D section of the company's website. The most prominent design feature of aeon is a touchscreen that stretches over the full surface area of the phone, similar to BenQ-Siemens's Black box concept phone we saw recently. Currently mobile technology isn't quite up to realizing this fantasy, but we'll sleep better tonight knowing that at least one of the cellphone industry's biggest names shares the same dream as we do -- BenQ's dream didn't count, unfortunately.

    handphone Nokia 5730 XpressMusic

    Nokia 5730 XpressMusic gets exhaustively previewedWell, hello there 5730 XpressMusic, so nice to finally meet you! This admittedly odd looking Nokia has been brought to our attention courtesy of Russia's own Mobile-Review, and while we're still trying to decide whether or not the QWERTY slide-out keyboard is a turn off or totally awesome (with its dot matrix-styled font), we figured it prudent to pass along the information, anyway. Said mobile sports a 2-inch QVGA screen, backlit keys, a 1,000mAh battery good for 4.5 hours of yappin', EDGE data, inbuilt GPS, 128MB of RAM, a microSD card slot, USB / Bluetooth and Symbian S60 running the show. We're told to expect it out in European markets this April for €220 ($289), though worldwide availability remains a mystery. Have a look in the read link for eleventy billion more images and a poorly translated preview
